International Youth Forum of UNESCO "Man and the Biosphere" Programme (MAB) took place on 17-23 September 2017 in the Po Delta Biosphere Reserve in Italy. The Forum brought together young representatives of national biosphere reserves from 85 countries, including Kazakhstan.Young people are the future of Biosphere reserves, and they should be given a voice in shaping their territory and defining their engagement in the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Having this in mind, the MAB Secretariat in collaboration with UNESCO Regional Bureau in Venice considered the need to offer an opportunity for young people who care about the special territories in which they live in to become active in the MAB Programme and to contribute to the sustainable development of their communities, in line with the Lima Action Plan.
The Forum was attended by Dinara Naizabayeva and Diana Shakula from Kazakhstan. According to the participants, the discussion at the Forum was built on a constant dialogue with the youth during which the participants had an opportunity to share their experiences, success stories and failures, barriers they face towards the successful implementation of their activities. Participants were able to discuss the main advantages and achievements of their biosphere reserves, as well as existing problems and challenges.
After almost a week of debates at the Forum youth delegates from over 140 biosphere reserves adopted a Declaration, where they agreed on a shared vision for the future of youth in biosphere reserves. The MAB Youth Forum delegates were particularly concerned with fostering attractive and long term employment opportunities linked to the values of biosphere reserves, such as the conservation of biodiversity and habitat restoration. The Declaration calls on the World Network of Biosphere Reserves to share scientific and indigenous knowledge widely and to support knowledge transmission to future generation.
The Forum was organized by UNESCO’s MAB Programme, Regional Bureau in Venice and the Po Delta Biosphere Reserve, under the auspices of the Italian Government.
The 2017 MAB Youth Forum is part of UNESCO’s efforts to ensure that young women and men are engaged in policies and programmes affecting them, and lead action to promote peace and sustainable development in their countries and communities.
This activity contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 15 on ecosystem and biodiversity conservation.
