Young TV producers on HIV issues training continues in Almaty

31 May - 4 June, 2010 in Almaty Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research (KIMEP) conducted a training worshop for young TV producers on HIV issues is going ahead.

The organizers are UNESCO Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in Almaty, in collaboration with the Journalism and Mass Communication Department of KIMEP. The purpose of the training is to upgrade the competences of TV producers creating quality TV programs with the participation of the people involved, or affected by HIV.

The 8 participants of the workshop are young TV producers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, who were identified through a contest launched by the organizers submitting their materials on social journalism topics. During the workshop media trainers Marina Maximova and Irina Kunanbaeva have centered the content of the workshop on developing practical and professional skills and gaining motivation to develop the regional TVs, with the participation of young TV producers of new projects on the HIV topics.



Participants visited the National AIDS Center, Kazakhstan Union of People Living with HIV, and had discussions with HIV-positive people. Experts of international organizations, S. Karpov, G. Lee (UNESCO), I. Savchenko (UNAIDS) briefed the producers on the situation in Central Asia as well as on the main trends in the spread of the infection, and the strategies applied in response to HIV and AIDS.

The training covered next topics: the ethics of journalism, the correct vocabulary and terminology, genres, lighting, appliances, TV interview techniques etc. During the training each participant is supposed to create a TV report regarding the HIV and using technical skills learned during the sessions. Also, young TV producers will establish a network in the Central Asian team, which has become an integral part of the World Network of Young TV Producers on HIV.

This training should be considered as a contribution to the implementation of the UNESCO strategy concerning the cooperation with journalists in the HIV/AIDS media coverage. Over the past few years media trainings for journalists have been organized in all Central Asian countries. National media trainers on HIV have also been trained. This pre-production workshop in Almaty will be the starting point for the implementation of new projects, documentaries created in accordance with international journalism and professional ethics standards.
